Extended work rights for Temporary Graduate (485) visa – Post-Study Stream

The Department of Home Affairs (DoHA) have announced extended work rights for international students who have graduated from an Australian higher education provider. This will apply to those granted a Temporary Graduate (485) visa under the Post-Study Stream and who have an eligible occupation and qualification/s.

The extended work rights come into effect from 1 July 2023. This will increase the currently available work rights as follows:

  • two years to four years for select Bachelor degrees
  • three years to five years for select Master degrees
  • four years to six years for all Doctoral degrees.

The final list of eligible qualifications and occupations is not available yet, however an indicative list has been provided and you can access it here. These targeted skills will be confirmed before 1 July 2023 and will be reviewed annually. It is anticipated that the list will change based on the labour need at the time.

The extension of the length of time that the Temporary Graduate (485) – Post-Study Stream visa is granted will provide international students the opportunity to build their work experience and contribute to the Australia economy.

The current regional and remote Australia settings for this visa will stay in place and where applicable, will be eligible for the additional two years.

Eligible graduates with a valid Temporary Graduate (485) visa on 1 July 2023 or who apply for a Temporary Graduate (485) visa after 1 July 2023, will be considered for the two year extension.
