Currently the waiting list to sponsor a parent is more than 30 years. However, there is a shorter route and that is if you pay a Contribution.
There are four categories of visa under this pathway and they are:
- Contributory Parent visa (Subclass 173) temporary residency
- Contributory Parent visa (Subclass 143) permanent residency
- Contributory Aged Parent (Subclass 884) temporary residency
- Contributory Aged Parent visa (Subclass 864) permanent residency
The processing time is still about 2 to 3 years but compared to the current normal parent visa processing time, it is a much better option.
The Temporary visas allow the parent to come to Australia for a period of 2 years then apply for a permanent visa. Alternatively, you can apply directly for the permanent visa. The benefit of the Temporary visa is that you can split the payment into parts whereas for the permanent one it is paid in one payment.
The current amount paid as the contribution is $43,600.00 for the permanent visa. For the temporary visa $29,130 is paid initially and a further payment of $19,420 when application is made for the permanent visa.
All applicants must still pass the balance of family test, health and character requirements. Your sponsoring child must also provide an Assurance of Support.
If you apply in Australia, you can obtain a bridging visa to remain in Australia until the visa is granted.
This is a much faster pathway and will give your parents security in relation to their long-term ability to remain as permanent residents in Australia.
